our botanical dye process

1.

we source material from responsible partners who produce organic or low-impact fabrics and garments with fair labor practices. sometimes this means working with a women-owned fabric supplier in New Jersey, sometimes this means working with salvaged or vintage fibers - sometimes it means working directly with a farmer producing wool from their grass-fed flock.

2.

we mordant minimally - the process of mordanting fabric allows the fibers to accept dye and is an essential part of the dye process. this process can include heavy metals or caustic chemicals when done industrially and it’s important to us that our dye baths leave a minimal water and chemical footprint.

4.

we extract naturally vibrant color from our own plants as well as responsibly sourced local materials. we grow much of our own dye supply - from black beans to marigolds to mint - and source others from the local food stream - things like onion skins and avocado pits that might otherwise be considered waste.

we work small and sell local; all of our homewares and hand-dyed fabric goods are crafted by hand with the everyday needs of our neighbors in mind. our work is meant to fulfill a need for pretty, useful things while leaving a small environmental footprint.
